Posted by Jason Feldman MS, RD on April 27, 2011

It seems that there isn’t one true “cabbage soup diet” out there. Every dietitian, dieter and weight loss guru seems to have cooked up their own version of this extremely popular weight loss plan. But no matter what version of the 7 day diet you prefer, there are a few tricks that can shoot your weight loss through the roof.

Cabbage Soup Diet | Eat Slowly

If you’ve never tried the cabbage soup diet for yourself before, get ready. Like any negative calorie diet, you won’t be eating nearly the same volume of food that you’re probably used to. Instead, you will largely be subsisting on bland choices like soup, fruit and the occasional piece of chicken over the entire duration of the 7 day diet. Eating slowly can help you enjoy every morsel so you don’t head to your local fast food joint.

Cabbage Soup Diet | Don’t Cheat (not even once)

Many people who want to lose weight think they can follow the spirit of the cabbage soup diet without actually sticking to every detail. One thing you should know about all negative calorie diets is that the devil is in the details. Even one round of heading to your fridge and downing a tub of ice cream is enough to throw the entire diet off course. If you do cheat you’ll have to start the 7 day diet all over again.

Cabbage Soup Diet | Lift Weights

Studies show that people who pump iron while dropping pounds lose more fat than those that sit around. This remains true for the cabbage soup diet as well. Eating lots of negative calorie foods is going to throw your body’s metabolism for a loop. Your body will want to toss off as much muscle as possible. But if you strength train you’re body will hold on to more muscle mass and burn f instead.

Cabbage Soup Diet | Eat Protein

The original cabbage soup diet was very low in protein. Foods like bananas and cabbage soup are nearly protein-free. This isn’t good if you’re serious about losing weight. Protein helps fill you up and reduces muscle mass loss during rapid weight loss. Protein-rich foods allowed on the weight loss plan include chicken, beef and low-fat fish.

Cabbage Soup Diet | Keep Busy

Your time on this 7 day diet isn’t the time to be sitting around the house watching TV. Boredom is a huge contributor to impulse eating. Make your week on the cabbage soup diet a busy one filled with activities that you enjoy. Consider volunteering, going to the park or walking the dog whenever hunger strikes.

Cabbage Soup Diet | Take a Vitamin

The cabbage soup diet is known for many things. Being a complete source of vitamins and minerals is not one of them. The foods allowed in negative calorie diets tend to be low in calories and low in nutrients. Taking a simple multivitamin will help prevent deficiencies that can results from dieting. Make sure that the vitamin you choose has enough vitamin C, B6 and vitamin B12.

That way your round of the cabbage soup diet will be effective and healthy.
