This continues our series of juxtaposing the cabbage soup weight loss diet with another very popular diet. This is a battle of so-called “fad diets”: the cabbage soup diet and the negative calorie grapefruit diet.
You already know all about the cabbage soup diet -a temporary way to blast off body fat in an extremely rapid time period. However, you may not be as intimately familiar with the grapefruit weight loss diet.
The grapefruit diet relies on the notion that grapefruits contain special fat burning and weight loss properties that most other fruits lack. Interestingly, the cabbage soup fat loss plan and the grapefruit diet have similar origins -both emerging in popularity from fax machine uses in the late 1970s.
Before we get into the nitty gritty of this fat loss diet vs. the cabbage soup diet, let’s do a quick summary of the grapefruit diet.
Simply put, with this weight loss plan, you drop your calories to below 1000 per day and eat 5-6 servings per day of either grapefruits or grapefruit juice. Like the cabbage soup fat loss diet, this isn’t a lifelong plan. You go on the diet for 7-10 days, take a breather, and then go back if need be.
Unlike most other weight loss diets, and even the cabbage soup diet, the grapefruit diet has a bit of scientific evidence to back it up. University research from 2004 found that eating grapefruits, in addition to limiting portions and exercising, resulted in more weight loss than dieting alone.
It turns out that the pros and cons of these two fat loss diets are mirrors of one another. In terms of pros, both the cabbage soup diet and the grapefruit diet are as easy as pie to follow. No counting, measuring, or weighing anything. Just follow the plan to a “T”, grit your teeth for 7 days, and watch the weight fly off.
Also, both have the advantage of not needing anyone else to follow for rapid weight loss. Most low calorie diets require the assistance of a physician or a dietitian to monitor for safety (known as VLCD). On the other hand, because these are tried and true, and in all honestly not THAT low-cal, you can do it on your own.
Not only does this make things logistically easier, but makes them cheap weight loss as well. Compared to Jenny Craig and their competitors, these two plans are dirt cheap!
The downsides of each weight loss plan couldn’t be more similar. Both tend to affect muscle more than fat -meaning that dress size may still be the same even though the scale shows lost pounds.
Also, these two weight loss diets are both incredibly boring! The cabbage soup diet is notorious for driving people absolutely bonkers for the 7 days that they’re on it. Also, both have a reputation for large amounts of weight rebound -which may quickly reverse all that hard work!
